Summer playschemes 2009- 2010

In 2009 we set up a summer playscheme for young people in Bishops Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and Hertford.
The summer playschemes are always a highlight for the young people that attend the youth clubs in Hertford, Bishops Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. At Hertford we try to run sessions that start or finish at the two step weir that has been designed with Kayakers in mind and is always an exciting finale to a paddle down the river.

Each course is pitched to the experience of the group where young people take the lead in developing the skills needed to learn to paddle, but not only that, we arrange for the groups to camp overnight and then undertake a mini expedition.

For some of the group it was a first time at camping in a tent and having to cook a meal, from purchasing the food from a nearby supermarket right down to lighting the trangias and building an evening camfire from driftwood.

For youth groups we can arrange camping at several campsites by the river as part of the paddling experience. These are normally free courses which have been funded with the support of Hertfordshire CVS and East Herts District Council and Hertfordshire Youth Connexions.

In 2010 we extended our playsheme provision to include groups from Sawbridgeworth who were able to get a minibus from the Bullfield Centre to ESSA for Tuesday evening paddling sessions.

In 2011 we extended our fleet of boats and offered even more paddling sessions over the summer with kids getting to paddle for free with Lucasade and Asda promotions. We also offered our first pool sessions for young people to help develop water confidence safety and awareness as part of our young peoples development program.
