Trip reports Christmas Hats Paddle 18th December 2011

Dec 18, 2011

This year we had a great paddle from Roydon mill and headed to ESSA at Nazing, We broke through the ice to get on at Roydon mill with ice burgs between Roydon and Brick Lock on the river. The river must warm up a bit as the River Lea and Stort Join at Rye house as from here on the weather brightened up a bit and we made good progress on to Dobbs Weir with a quick inspection of the weir and a wave to customers enjoying lunch at The fish and Eels pub at the weir.

With temperatures barely reaching anything like 3 degrees above freezing we were well dressed in Wetsuits and layered up. We had a beautiful days paddle and the weather gave us a mix of snow, rain and wonderful low sunshine, sometimes all at the same time! It seemed like a great ideas in September when we put together the program of winter paddles and we were pleased that in the end the sun shone down of us and we had calm conditions for a great days paddling.   We had a fantastic day away from the shops!
